DC Sports and Entertainment Commission CEO Allen Y. Lew Tapped by DC Mayor Adrian Fenty to Head New Office of Facility Modernization

(Washington, DC)-Today, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty announced that Allen Y. Lew, chief executive officer of the DC Sports & Entertainment Commission (Sports Commission), will serve as executive director of the newly created Office Facilities Modernization for DC Public Schools. It was also announced that Gregory A. O’Dell will likely replace Lew as CEO at the Commission.

To help ensure continuity in ongoing projects, particularly the completion of the District’s new ballpark, Mayor Fenty also announced that Lew would be appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sports Commission.

“I am grateful to Mayor Fenty, members of the Sports Commission Board and others who have encouraged me to accept this new opportunity. During the many conversations with the Mayor, members of the City Council and the community, it was clear that everyone shares a deep and abiding passion for finally moving forward on school modernization for District of Columbia schools. I too share that passion for improving our schools and look forward to working with the community to get the job done,” said Lew.

Mr. Lew has successfully managed the Sports Commission since 2004. Upon his arrival, he immediately led an intensive effort to renovate historic Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. The renovation was completed on time for the 2005 inaugural baseball season for the Washington Nationals. He has also carefully guided construction of the District’s new $611 million ballpark that will serve as the new home for the Nationals. The project has garnered praise for surpassing local contracting and employment goals.

Under Mr. Lew’s leadership, the Sports Commission expanded its mission of athletic field and recreational facility development in the District by completing multi-purpose sports complexes at Fort Greble Park in Ward 8 and Kenilworth-Parkside in Ward 7.

Prior to joining the Sports Commission, Mr. Lew served as managing director and then acting general manager and chief executive officer of the Washington Convention Center Authority where he led the construction of the award-winning, $850 million, 2.5 million square foot facility. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the City College of New York School of Architecture. He also holds a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture and Planning.
